The relapse that wasn't a failure
A client had ended three relationships at exactly the same point: the moment things became genuinely close. Each time she handled it with insight, reflecting and resolving to do better. And each time the pattern returned. Her question was blunt: "Why can't I fix this?"
Follow the pattern, don't fight it
When a pattern keeps resurfacing, the usual strategy of more effort and more control is working against you. In hypnotherapy we turn toward it with curiosity. If this behaviour were protecting you from something, what would that be?
What it was protecting her from
The answer was not dramatic. Closeness had once come with a cost she was too young to name, so her system learned to leave before the cost arrived. The pattern was loyal, not broken. It just hadn't been told the situation had changed.
Accountability as honesty
Real accountability isn't punishing yourself for repeating a pattern. It's being honest about what you do, and honest about why. Without compassion it becomes punishment; without honesty it becomes performance.
Questions for a returning pattern
What does this pattern give me? What does it spare me from? When did I first need that protection? What would I do instead if I felt safe enough?
